Heads Up marks Warpaint’s 3rd studio full lengthandyes, itsounds incredible (justas you knewit would). Here the Warpaintseem to have really takenstride in an eclectic sound that doesn’t try to pigeonhole itself, but rathertakes strength in its diversity. Like previous efforts The Fool and the eponymous Warpaint, the ladiesaren’t afraid to go outside the realms of conventional indie rock and incorporate elements of othermusic styles – most notablyhip-hop, dance and electronic. For Heads Up, bassistTheresa Wayman is quoted asas taking cuesfrom Kendrick Lamar, while drummer Stella Mozgawa has drawninspirationfrom the late great J. Dilla. You might notexpect that, but it’s actually easy to hear on tracks like the moody and brooding “Dre,” “By Your Side,” or “Don’t Wanna.” The band doesn’t just stick to one thing however, they’re able to change focus and make it work just aswell. Indie dance? Check “New Song” or “The Stall.” Post-punk vibes? “So Good.” Upbeat rock & roll? “Heads Up.” Breakout potential? Most definitely. Recommended.
